Sort order. Oct 19, Chad rated it really liked it Shelves: , hoopla. Jim Aparo's Batman is the Batman I always remember from my childhood and he still looks fantastic today. I love Aparo's simplicity and use of shadow with the character, especially shots of Batman running with his cape billowing behind him.
Editorially, they made some strange decisions. The book begins with a serialized story about Talia al Ghul framing Batman for her murder. Unfortunately, Aparo only illustrated the first three parts so the end of the story isn't included.
Untold Legend of the Batman unnecessarily makes some odd changes to Batman's origins that were soon retconned. Feb 25, Tom rated it really liked it. However, many of the stories do not hold up. What does hold up is Jim Aparo's art. In my opinion he is one of the greatest Batman artists of any generation. It is also nice to enjoy comic book stories that can be told in a single issue.
I think that that is a skill that has mostly been lost. May 09, E.
More great Jim Aparo Batman! Why is it a shame to start with this? Because Mr. Another more minor complaint is that this volume includes several Alan Brennert written issues of Brave and the Bold which, alas, were also included in the Alan Brennert Batman Collection. The stories are certainly worthwhile, but perhaps DC should have included them in one collection only.
Great to see Mr. Fleischer and Aparo return to that character, though the story itself is far less macabre than the stuff they did previously with the Spectre! A fun collection and worth picking up! View 2 comments. Top shelf This is THE stuff. Don't get me wrong, a good percentage of the time the stories don't make a lick of sense but still are a lot of fun. The artwork remains some of the best Batman illustrations ever. Aug 13, Jonbob06 rated it it was amazing. I love all the trades of these bronze aga Batman stories.
Some highlights: Metamorpho impersonating a Hindu god as he and Batman rescue a drugged Plastic Man out from under the influence of the infamous Ruby Ryder; Jim Aparo and Bob Haney as themselves defeating a group of terrorists with the help of Batman and Sgt. This collection is of my favorite Batman artist; Jim Aparo. I started with volume 3 because it contains the 3-part 'Untold Legend of the Dark Knight' mini that was recommended to me by friends. My only complaint with this series is that it truly is just Aparo's art for the most part. Meaning, when he must not have been the artist on the final part of the 'Batman, Murderer' story that opens this volume, DC did not include it Oh well. This i I love all the trades of these bronze aga Batman stories. This is mostly a collection of later Brave and the Bold issues and those are always fun. Would recommend.
Jul 25, Nate added it. Good stuff. The book kicks off with three mids Detective Comics issues, telling a continuous story wherein Batman seemingly gets framed for murder.
My favorite came from Dick Grayson in a scene that, for my money, defines his character perfectly. Even if Batman were guilty, what does Dick do? Supports his friend that he loves deeply by offering words of consolation. The Untold Legend of the Batman , the first ever Batman miniseries, is the most significant story in this volume.
As it stands, Untold Legend is solid overview of the pre- Crisis Batman. The framing and resolution, emphasizing the duality of Batman and Bruce Wayne, is also strong. Thus, she seeks out the Bruce Wayne of Earth-One to ask his advice on being a hero.
This story takes place after the Batman of Earth-Two has died. What would it be like if you met a different version of your crimefighting partner, and he was the same age as you? The rest of the Brave and the Bold issues are fine, if forgettable. The story is about two brothers, products of the late 60s, struggling to find their place in the world 15 years later. I noted that Lucius Fox plays a role in Untold Legend. This is my first time seeing him in a story. My familiarity with the character comes from the Christopher Nolan Batman movies. Batman wears his Golden Age costume in this one no yellow oval.
